What causes Dyslexic Symptoms?

These are some of the skills that need to have been learned to be able to read and comprehend fluently:

  • Smoothly control the eyes to move along the line of print on a page, taking in information in the correct order.
  • Automatically recognise each word to understand its meaning
  • Store all the words read in the brains working memory, put them together in the correct sequence to understand (or comprehend) what was read.
  • Maintain attention long enough to allow reading to continue so that all information can be retained.

The under-development of any one of these reading skills will make reading for long periods difficult. It has a dramatic knock on effect with other skills associated with dyslexia based symptoms e.g. handwriting, spelling and memory function as the brain works hard to coordinate all of these elements.

It is not unusual for some highly intelligent people to find this a challenge; this is not related to their intelligence, it’s due to the under-development of the appropriate part of the cerebellum.

Prof Bellum explains how a developed cerebellum makes skills automatic and enables people to learn to their potential.
